After a certain age, our children start to spend more time with their peers than with their parents or other adult influences. Whether at school or hanging with friends on the weekend, it’s important that young adolescents and teens have the skills and confidence to make healthy choices and avoid destructive decisions.

The Prevention Program at Citizen Advocates promotes awareness, resources and education related to youth mental health and addiction at schools throughout Franklin County. Our youth prevention and education specialists use a mix of evidenced-based programs and activities that foster positive youth development.

Evidence-based programs reinforce knowledge, coping skills, prevention techniques and interventions to support healthy choices when it comes to addiction, bullying, mental health and promoting self-care. Other initiatives like Girl Power, SADD, Signs of Suicide Program or Parent Groups are designed to promote leadership, confidence, stress management and decrease high-risk behaviors among youth.

In addition to working with youth, our Prevention Specialists work closely with school staff – teachers, counselors and administrators – to develop trusted relationships with students, increase awareness around risky behaviors, and support referrals for struggling students.  Equally important is fighting the stigma that exists around mental wellness, suicide prevention, bullying, and addiction.
