EMDR Therapy—short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing—is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that helps people heal from distressing or traumatic experiences. It is widely used in the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may also help reduce symptoms of anxiety and other stress-related concerns.

During EMDR therapy, a highly trained therapist supports you in briefly recalling difficult memories while guiding you through a structured process that may include eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (such as tapping). This process can help the brain reprocess painful experiences so they feel less intense over time. Many people find that memories become less upsetting and easier to think about without the same emotional or physical reaction.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy may be helpful for people who are struggling with:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Disturbing memories or flashbacks
  • Anxiety and panic symptoms
  • Grief and loss
  • Phobias or fears
  • Stress related to medical experiences or chronic illness
  • Depression connected to difficult life events
