Building Leaders, Strengthening Teams

Citizen Advocates’ Network Leadership Foundation Institute equips leaders with essential competencies, sharpens their business acumen and fosters authentic, mindful management practices. As a cornerstone of the network’s leadership strategy, the Institute reflects our conviction that strong leadership builds strong communities. This commitment is supported by a Training & Development team that delivers dynamic learning experiences and expert coaching at every level.

That same commitment to people extends across the frontlines. Through a partnership between Operations and Training & Development, Citizen Advocates has launched on‑the‑job training and mentorship programs shaped by feedback from 30‑day check‑ins with new employees. These initiatives accelerate skill development and build confidence through structured mentorship and standardized training experiences.

Celebrating Excellence

Citizen Advocates’ Spring Awards celebrate employees who go above and beyond in service to their communities. The event highlights the dedication, compassion and leadership that define our workforce and the meaningful impact our employees make every day.

Among the recent honorees is Jeffrey Morris, Director of Community Living and a 39‑year veteran of the organization. Jeffrey received the Mark Carter Award, named in honor of Citizen Advocates’ longtime residential services director, in recognition of his unwavering advocacy and deep respect for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The award was presented by Mark Carter’s widow, Mary Jo Carter‑Codling, who worked alongside Jeffrey for decades, and Mark’s mother, Gail Carter—making the moment a powerful tribute to both legacy and lifelong service.

Direct Support Roles

Michael Mersinger has been a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Citizen Advocates for 24 years, working in both community and residential settings. He currently works at Citizen Advocates’ site-based Day Habilitation program in Malone where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities acquire, retain and improve a variety of skills while fostering friendships with peers.

“The goal is for our clients to become as independent as possible,” Michael explains. “If you’re a caring, giving person this job is right for you.”

When Michael’s not working, he enjoys being at home and getting outdoors to enjoy the weather.

Nursing Careers

Registered Nurse Kamie O’Connor leads with heart and hands-on experience as Citizen Advocates’ Associate Director of Nursing. After 15 years in the restaurant industry, the North Bangor native followed her passion for helping others—earning her nursing credentials and joining Citizen Advocates in 2018 as a floor nurse.

Whether she’s supporting midnight shift staff through a cross-site buddy system or helping walk-in patients during peak hours, Kamie leads by example—always ready to jump in wherever she’s needed.

“I couldn’t see myself doing anything else, honestly,” she says. “When I’m here it feels like I’m home. You go home feeling good at night because you’ve made a difference in someone else’s life.”
