“When I attended medical school Hahnemann, now Drexel University, was well known for its emphasis on psychoanalysis and child development. I was privileged to have several brilliant teachers at this school and my subsequent residencies. My choice to become a psychiatrist was largely influenced by these professors. I was also influenced by my parents who were both internists and researched and treated pain. This was the old days when doctors had their offices and even laboratories at home. I remember many dinner conversations, starting when I was a child, about psychosomatic medicine. In fact, my mother, struck by the interplay between mind and body when treating her patients, decided to do a psychiatric residency at age 65.”
