Keeping youth fueled for healthy summer fun

MALONE, N.Y. – Healthy breakfasts and lunches are once again available this summer through the Citizen Advocates Summer Food Service Program.

Eligible youth will receive breakfast and lunch at multiple locations in northern Franklin County starting July 1.  Last year, the Summer Food Service Program served roughly 18,750 lunches and 8,000 breakfasts at recreation parks, schools and community gathering spaces in Brushton-Moira, Chateaugay, Constable, Malone, Owls Head, St. Regis Falls, Westville and West Bangor.

Funded by the USDA and administered through the New York State Education Department, Citizen Advocates sponsors the Summer Food Service Program locally.  Children 18 years of age or younger are eligible for the program through approved sponsors that meet federal nutrition guidelines.  As a sponsor of the program, Citizen Advocates is reimbursed based on costs associated with the number of meals served.  All meals are provided free of charge.

The seven-week program runs locally from July 1 to Aug. 16, with dates of operation varying between sites.  Each weekday, an experienced group of workers prepare, package and distribute 475 lunches to approved sites in northern Franklin County.  Menus are subject to change, but generally include milk, juice, fruit, cereal or muffin for breakfast, and sandwiches, wraps, juice, milk, chips, vegetables or fruit for lunch.
