Despite COVID delays, Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center back on track

Citizen Advocates is pleased to announce the upcoming opening of a new Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center in Ogdensburg, New York.

Ogdensburg is among the many Northern New York Communities where there is a serious need for individuals experiencing an urgent mental health or addiction crisis to receive prompt, effective, recovery-focused care in a respectful, caring environment – any time of day or night, no appointment needed.  The rate of adults hospitalized for alcohol and substance use disorder in Ogdensburg and neighboring communities is much higher than other regions of New York State. Our new center is intended to reverse this growing trend, which has only become worse due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At Citizen Advocates, we want to help people in immediate need. In the current environment, people facing a mental health or addiction recovery crisis are usually brought to an emergency department where they might face long waits and, in the end, not get access to the appropriate level of care.  The staff at the new Citizen Advocates Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center will provide quality treatment to anyone, at any time, as soon as an individual walks through our doors. This is critical to getting people the right care, in the right place at the right time.

“We are hoping to see more urgent care clinics for mental health and addiction treatment around the globe,” says James Button, CEO of Citizen Advocates. “These innovative services increase access to essential behavioral health treatment and are needed now more than ever. By taking pressure off Emergency Rooms and removing any barriers for individuals needing support, we hope to see tremendous mental health benefits for many individuals throughout Northern New York.”

This state-of-the-art clinic will offer 24-hour, walk-in access to mental health and addiction recovery treatment. When an individual comes to the clinic, they will be seen and evaluated promptly by a medical team to help stabilize the crisis. Our approach includes development of an individualized treatment and recovery plan and working with individuals to connect them with ongoing care.

Staffing the center are a team of providers, including a supervising physician, advanced practice providers, registered nurses, therapists, targeted case managers (professionals who connect individuals with services such as job training or housing), peer specialists (trained counselors who often have lived experiences with a mental health or addiction diagnosis), and customer support professionals.

Better Outcomes

By providing effective, recovery-focused services in a respectful and accessible environment, Citizen Advocates aims to reduce or eliminate avoidable ER visits, law enforcement encounters, or use of emergency responders.

Our new center will provide a variety of mental health and substance use disorder treatments, including:

  • Mental health & addiction counseling
  • Co-occurring conditions
  • Outpatient detoxification
  • Individualized treatment and recovery plan
  • Voluntary stabilization & respite stays
  • Case management
  • Care coordination
  • Therapy groups
  • Peer-run groups

Our mission is to help anyone in crisis, withdrawal, or transitioning from a higher level of behavioral care. Our integrated care models of therapeutic services are designed to support and enhance the quality of life for all individuals living in St. Lawrence County.

We anticipate opening the doors to our new 24/7 center in April of 2022.
