Drug and alcohol related addictions can sometimes result in jail time for some individuals. There is the legal and justice system implications that result, but the circumstances may also point to the need for addiction or mental health services. For example, many people with addiction also have a mental health disorder, such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. About 45 percent of inmates in local jails simultaneously grapple with a substance use and psychological disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Despite this, the services inmates need to properly address mental health or addiction are not available in a jail setting. Citizen Advocates works closely with the administrative staff at the Franklin County Jail to provide the services needed.

Treatment for individuals while in jail can be life-saving. Inmates receiving the appropriate evidence-based treatment and counseling have a reduced risk for further substance abuse and drug-related overdose or death. And, the right treatment can help reduce the risk for returning to jail and increase the likelihood of finding meaningful employment, rebuilding relationships and improving overall health.
