Drug and alcohol related addictions can sometimes result in jail time for individuals. Apart from the resulting legal and justice system implications, circumstances may also point to the need for addiction and/or mental health services. For example, many people who struggle with addiction also have a mental health disorder like depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. In fact, about 45 percent of inmates in local jails grapple with both substance abuse and a psychological disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Despite this, the services inmates need to properly address mental health or addiction are not available in a jail setting. Citizen Advocates works closely with the administrative staff at the Franklin County Jail to provide the services needed.

Providing treatment to individuals in jail can be life-saving. Inmates that receive the appropriate treatment and counseling have a reduced risk for further substance abuse and drug-related overdose or death. The right treatment can help reduce the risk of an individual returning to jail. It also simultaneously increases their likelihood of finding meaningful employment, rebuilding relationships and improving overall health.
